Photographs you can create at home

We’ve been wracking our brains trying to think of a way to support our wonderful community and wanted to share some joy and light by suggesting a little project while you may have some time. Whether you have an enforced period of time at home happening, or have chosen to stay in and safe, we have some ideas for you to keep you creative and in a more positive frame of mind.

Soulful photo projects

Rather than this just being another list of words, I have written this to really make you think and feel. Use this time to allow for thoughts to flow. It may take you an hour or just a moment. There’s no rules, just enjoy.

1 -Observe one subject, listen, pay attention to the light and document their day.

2- Capture movement. Dancing, jumping, swaying, skipping.

3- One subject, 4 different perspectives. Tell a story in 4 images.

4- Hands. They can be incredibly expressive, shoot hands against light and dark backgrounds. Watch for light patterns at certain times of the day.

5- Shadow play. When the light illuminates a small patch of wall, or a big open space, use the harsh light to create shadow patterns on a subject. Leaves, net curtains, hands, grass - be as creative as you like.

6- Emotions. Explore how to capture different emotions. Use light to help express feeling.

7- Self portrait. Show how you feel right now. Use your smart phone and a mirror, use a tripod if you have one.

8- Double exposure. Find two photo ideas that you think would blend well together to tell a story and either shoot them on your DSLR or use an app to merge photos in your phone.

9- What can you see? take a photo of only what you can see out of your window each day for 7 days. See how varied you can make them.

10- Silhouette. Play with exposure and create interesting shapes while shooting a silhouette. Think about what you would like to express.

10- Still life. Spend time setting up a scene on a table of things that you love. Bring a table close to the window and shoot it there.

12- Flat lay. Set up a scene below you and shoot from above. Think about your angles, getting even light and composition.

13- Shoot a portrait but through something. A window with rain on it, a net or voile curtain, a glass of water.

14- Abstract. Take photographs not totally in focus. Get up close and shoot detail. Find interesting angles, shoot minimal with lots of negative space.

We so hope that you have fun with this, as and when you can. If you would like to follow along with others, you can do so by tagging #creativitylifts2020 in any of your photographs on instagram and in stories.

Each day we will be doing this along with you and suggesting ideas for each one as we go along on stories.

We’d love you to join us!

Sending love and light out to you all.

J&J xx
