Fun Video apps for photographers

Over the last few weeks I’ve found myself filming more and more on my phone. If it’s for instagram stories or just for us to keep, here are some of our favourite apps for filming on your phone. We haven’t been sponsored or paid by any of these apps just something we wanted to share.

Rtro

Rtro - an app by a company called moment who make awesome lenses for phones. When you are ready for filming it gives you a timer of 1 min which you have to fill. You can record individual clips and download them to your camera roll but the point of the app is that you film lots of different clips filling your time up and then the app then edits it all together for you. Some of the filters are a little strong for my taste but I’m sure you can make them work in different lighting situations. They also have a filter called dad cam which made us giggle.

Dazz Cam

Dazz Cam This is by far my favourite, it’s actually a photography and a video app when you get the choice to use different styles of cameras ranging from old VHS cameras to super 8’s. It’s super easy to use and I love the it just looks good right away. Some of the cameras you can change the film stock giving you a different look. You can also change the lens on most of the cameras to a fisheye lens which is super wide as you can imagine but adds an interesting effect! My personal favourite camera to use is the super 16mm camera with the widest frame and 24fps.

VHS VINTAGE CAM

VHS Vintage Cam - More controls than VHS Video Cam and a really nice app to shoot with. The person who made this app thought about how people hold their phone. It’s mainly a video app but there is a camera on the side of the screen allowing you to a shot while you’re filming. There is classic VHS and 1990’s / 1980’s / 1970’s and so on until 1920’s. The super 8 filter looks amazing and the best thing I like about this app is the frame button on the right hand side which allows you to distort the frame at any time. You can really customise the looks as well, so if you’ve chosen the VHS mode and it’s a little to much or you want to add more contrast it’s really easy to adjust it.

8MM

8MM - I know I said Dazz Cam was my favourite but this is so close. It’s such an awesome app, it’s really clear where everything is. It would be great to have a bigger viewer window but then everything seems to sit so well when you film. The app is based in landscape mode so you have to film that way but the footage looks great. The filters are some of my favourites, I really love the 2 strip filter. Where you change the filter there is also a frame jitter button which works really well and adds a little something extra.
